Great idea for Level 3s
I'm linking from the blog as well. Brand Republic.
Wednesday, 14 October 2009
This one's for Level 3s - Leek news.

in this week's Leek Post and Times - I'll bring the paper in tomorrow ... in the meantime, read this because it might help with your brief.
New Projects
Well everyone, our profile is ever expanding. Bandujo are presenting one of our student team's virals for the HIV brief to the client - might see it's way into production ... for the New York health Dept. not bad eh? well done Rav, Zakra (on a year out) and Sam Nuttall (graduate and grown-up now). They also want to pitch the Mastercard Spoof - was that Gordon's team? Received endorsement and support from Stoke Council for our Intensive Programme brief with Unis in Antwerp and Breda, and for the EU EFCCE Brief as well. Yes are implementing our winning student team's proposals for their website re-design ... watch this space for a link to that when it's live. Just received a request for a live brief with the RSPCA ... and a high profile one in Brussells that I can't say too much about just yet. Keep it going ABMers!!!

Direct Holidays microsite
Busy doing level 3s work for them again ... sigh .... this is a new microsite for Direct Holidays that has social networking functionality enabling tourists to share experiences. I'm thinking Leek brief?
Here's the writeup from the Drum:
"Outside The Box, the marketing agency based in Leeds, has launched a new microsite for client, Direct Holidays, part of the Thomas Cook group. Building on OTB’s work on the ‘The Direct Effect – make it last as long as you can' promotion, currently running on Direct Holiday’s website and throughout their current campaign, the team is launching ‘The Big Picture’ microsite.
This microsite provides a social networking facility to build on customer advocacy, including an invitation for Direct Holiday holiday makers to post their comments about their holiday.
Says Eleanor Sheppard, head of marketing at Direct Holidays: "The best reviewers are always those who have just returned and our holidaymakers tend to want to make their views known. We can rely on these reviews to be frank and forthright, so what better way to get the low down on your potential holiday whether you want to know more about the location, facilities or nightlife ... it’s all part of our aim to ensure our customers get what they expect with no surprises."

New networking site for ABMers
Thought I'd use the blog-o-sphere to introduce a new Networking site created specifically by, and for, ABM students. Steve Ward, our resident IT Guy, has designed and is admin-ing it. The webby address is:

Leek brief with Level 3s
Got the ball rolling today with a cracking live brief. Level 3s rebranding and proposing brand comms for Leek and Staffordshire Moorlands (or Staffordshire Peak District as it should be known). Less than 12 weeks to come up with long term sustainable brand strategies and 2 pitches before a winning team emerges. There's so much research and thinking to do particularly with place branding being such a big issue in the current economic climate. Will update regularly as the project evolves.

Adam Dan: Sofa Design Courtside!
Adam Lowe, Dan Needham and Chloe Smith (3 Monkeys No Banana) have seen their first project go live. You may remember this in the Degree Show and, of course, in D&AD New Blood and the Leek Post and Times where the project team initially consisted of Sam Nuttal and shib Hussain alongside Adam and Dan. What's nice about this is the fact that the clients have not only adopted the rebrand but are also working with 3 Monkeys on further communications. A big pat on the back all round. Keep it going and let's build on this. I'm in the process of reading "Exploiting Chaos" and a new start-up of this nature is brave but one that may ultimately, through perseverance and exploiting the current financial situation, break through and make a real go of it.

New from Glue London
Tried to share just the item on "Visit Sweden", but I've had to share the whole newsletter anyway. Interesting virals for "Visit Sweden", I'd like to see some reaction from Level 3s about this in line with thewir Staffs Moorlands project .... what do you think about them?

Had a bit of a busy outburst this morning after I discovered the Sharethis widget. It's great and I've posted loads of nice and varied bits from news on advertising to photoshop tutorials and blogs. I hope to do this periodically and hopefully get some discussion going on some of the topics I post. I've also linked this blog to Networked Blogs on Facebook which should update regularly.

Absolute Anthem
Found this at the gluepot this morning. I think it's a lovely spot for Absolut and I love the influence of Stefan Sagmeister in the use of environmental typography. I don't know if he had a hand in this or whether the team have been influenced by him. If that's the case, does it matter that this is quite clearly such a blatant "homage"?

Social Networking Losing It's Cool?
Found this on the Guardian:
"Young Abandon Social Networking Sites"
Makes interesting reading. Will we see a new move in Web 2.0? The bit that interests me is the statement intimating an older generation adopting youth signifiers. These signifiers, from skinny jeans to FaceBook, were not invented by the 15-24 year olds. On the contrary, the circular nature of fashion and taste has seen the reinvention of fashion, music, etc that is still relevant to the generation it was created by initially. Fashion-wise, the generation growing up in the 80s and 90s appropriated hoodies, ripped jeans, the lumberjack look, skateboarding, surfer style as signifiers of that given era. Music-wise, we are seeing a move away from the reinvention of disco, soul and funk that was house to a newfound appreciation of classic rock .... and not just in terms of new bands appropriating the sounds of Zep, AC/DC, etc, but there's even a reinvention of prog and a new audience for all the original bands who are newly prominent on the stadium circuit. And, yes, these are musicians in their 50s and 60s!
My point? Well, my point is that we must be clear that demographics have changed from being age-related to lifestyle. Those of us in communications (from advertising to the media) apply this thinking, but it appears that other commentators are still stuck in another era.

Book reviews
I'm going to start reviewing and offering my ten pennurth worth on books that I feel are topical and relevant and, hopefully, enlightening to not just students but others too. Please feel free to contribute. But first here's a link to an interesting article on the challenges facing the industry at present:
The Economist
In a way it's worrying to think that the ad industry will continue to suffer on the way back up, but the recession can bring innovation in its wake. Those brave enough will form their own start-ups rather than sit on their backsides waiting for things to happen. Three of our own grads are doing just that. Adam Lowe, Dan Needham and Shib Hussain have set up 3 Monkeys, No Banana in Stoke. A couple of weeks in and they already have a number of clients. Check them out here.
Ok, books then. I find inspiration in a variety of sources and keep up with both contemporary and classic fiction all the time. Keeping a couple of books on the go is a good way of getting the grey cells busy and I tend to read a decent novel and a business book simultaneously. Tips for you students and recent graduates (and anyone else dipping in) are Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point" and Tim Harford's "The Undercover Economist".
"The Tipping Point" is not new, of course, but is still very relevant. In this book Gladwell considers a number of scenarios where trends and ideas and behaviours move out of a niche and into the mainstream. He is laying down the foundations for exploring new forms of communication like social networking, for instance, as a viable tool for advertisers. Effectively this is a good book that helps us understand the importance of social dynamics and the move away from push to pull marketing.
"The Undercover Economist", on the other hand, demonstrates the ways in which economics affects and directs our everyday experiences. Using simple examples and plain English, economic theories are demystified and help the reader understand consumer behaviour and market forces. There is an official website here that is well worth a look.

New Blood '09
D&AD New Blood went brilliantly this year. I know it's taken a week to post this update but I've been trying to get the photos uploaded unsuccessfully. Set-up went smoothly. The A0 Concept Boards were perfect for the space. The stand was in a cracking position as well - Staffs had a full run to ourselves. The first surprise happened when we came back into the hall after judging to see we'd won a "Best New Blood". Turns out it was for Adam and Dan's portfolio - well done lads. Graphics won two and Animation one - a fact that went down well when the awards were handed out by Michael Johnson from JohnsonBanks.
Private View was busy, and Olympia is spacious enough to handle the volumes that walk through New Blood. Interest from industry could lead to work for the students there. A group called shellsuit zombie approached our lot and challenged them to a face-off with the MA lot from Falmouth. This entailed tackling a brief for Lucozade Energy over 30 minutes and pitching to a group of spectators. And, oh yes, we won. Shib put in a sterling performance - captured on video for posterity.
The workshops and portfolio reviews were the same as ever with positives and negatives all round. Chloe and Shib got to meet John Sayers who has been a great mentor to Ollie and Pip from last year. Hopefully she'll benefit from knowing him as well.
London was hot, but the space was lovely and air-conditioned. Well done D&AD for a cracking New Blood. Onwards and upwards for next year.
I can't get the photos up so here are links to my Facebook galleries:

Off to New Blood
Well, everything's packed and ready to go. A0 concept boards look good. Monday is the day!!
Friday, 19 June 2009
Catching Up.
Quite a lot to catch up on. Degree Show and assessments have made this quite a hectic few weeks and now we're having a mini-breather before D&AD New Blood.
Degree Show went well with very good feedback from visitors. Last year's lot turned up which was nice. Several projects did well and received positive attention. The Sofa Design project is ongoing, Green Man, by all accounts, is taking off. Constellation (Jamie and Sian), came second against stiff competition nationwide. Abbey reached the final rounds of the IPA student competition - waiting to see how she got on.
Dan, Adam and Shib have been asked to do some University Quarter branding ... or at least that's the plan. Sam's now working client-side for Truma in Uttoxeter .... all good stuff.
Onwards and upwards for New Blood. 9 projects are at the printers. The plan is to have an A0 concept board per brief, demonstrating our strategic approach. Brand books and portfolios will be accessible in the space and we'll also have a couple of iMacs running online portfolios.
pdate just before we go to London, and I'll try and update daily whilst we're there.

Pre-Degree Show news and stuff
Everything's nearly there for the Degree Show. I'll be sorting out portfolios and websites tomorrow. I'll link the websites from here as well. In the meantime, a quick update. Sian Wood and Jamie Charman came second in the Constellation Innovator of the Year Awards. Well done. And Dan Needham, Shib Hussain, Adam Lowe and Sam Nuttall are in the Leek Post and Times talking about their Sofa Design project. I'll link that when it goes online. Here it is (click to enlarge):

A few words i've sent to the press office.
The Sofa Design team had the Leek Post and Times photographer in today - well done you lot for spreading your message around. In the meantime, I've just penned a few words for our Press Office:
“a key feature of the Advertising and Brand Management course is the link with industry on a regional, national and international level. This link has enabled our students to work closely with advertising agencies and brand consultancies from Staffs to new York via London and Glasgow. The advantage this gives our students is reflected in the way their working practices evolve over three years to reflect current practice in industry. Our students develop confidence in presentation and strategy-led portfolios that give them an edge in the marketplace.
As well as engaging with industry, our students are encouraged to seek out clients and to enter competitions, particularly at Level 3. This year Level 3 students have engaged on various levels with external clients. One team that has had a successful experience with an external client was Sam Nuttall, Dan Needham, Shib Hussain and Adam Lowe. They worked very hard from initial contact through establishing their client’s needs, writing a brief and developing a brand identity (with accompanying guidelines) and a communications strategy that has been implemented by Sofa Design, a bespoke furniture company based in London. The students have worked with the client very closely and will continue to engage with them in a consultancy role ensuring brand guidelines and communications are adhered to in the short term.
The most successful team to engage in national competitions was Sian Wood and Jamie Charman who reached the final of the Constellation Wine Group’s Innovator of the Year Award. Their idea for a simplified wine brand to stand out in the cluttered markeplace was selected as one of the final six entries. The students pitched their idea to representatives from Constellation at the Gherkin in London on 29 May and will hear back on Monday 1st June. The students developed a strategy that included new products and interactive media after thoroughly researching the marketplace, understanding the target audience, and recognising a clear gap in the wine market.
These are two examples of where our students have met with success this year. There are others, one team has helped a bio-fuels company brand and market itself, another team are heading off to New York to work at an agency we have a working relationship with, and we still have the D&AD New Blood show to look forward to where ten selected students will show their work alongside the cream of the UK’s advertising and graphic design courses.”
And Sian and Jamie pitched at the Gherkin today .... good luck you two.

Ohhhhh ... Vienna .... dum dumdumdum (for those who remember Ultravox)
The EFCCE Conference in Vienna went very well. We were rushed but managed to pack in a lot of work at the expense of sightseeing. Judging the Final of the Student Competition was a good experience. A team from Austria (Werbe Akademie, Vienna) won and very good they were too. The runners-up (Berlin and Bucharest) were also good entires although the better of the two was Berlin by a long chalk. The Viennese team used the theme of first love to sell the idea of eco-awareness in car buying for 18-35 year olds. The idea was strong, crossed media successfully and was very professionally presented.
I gave a presentation on a collaboration between Yes Agency and ABM, also looking at community marketing and ideas related to community in the process. And then chaired a panel on Teaching Creativity where one speaker (Yvonne Koert from Avans Hogeschol in Breda) looked at pedagogical approaches - a theme we'd explored previously in workshops at the Breda meeting - and another (Georgia Millopoulou from Athens) looked at attitudes to creativity amongst creatives in Greek ad agencies. Great ideas but little time for questions unfortunately.
Informally we also began to set the agenda for a pan-European online brief to take place in October. We're not there with it yet but at least we have a feel for how it will function.
There'll be photos and news relating to it on the EFCCE website soon so I'll link to it when I can.

Lock-out Day ... this is it folks.
It's been a busy few days and there's nothing more that can be done for assessment. Studios are locked and we begin assessing tomorrow. The work is up, but we still have to sort out online and physical portfolios and printing for D&AD. Majority have worked really hard and I'm sure most will be successful in the future.
Another bit of good news today was notification of Sian Wood and Jamie Charman having reached the Finals of the Constellation Wine Group Innovation Competition. They now have to pitch their ideas at the Gherkin in London on Friday 29th May. I'll be there with them ... so fingers crossed.

quicky before Vienna
I wasn't going to update until Monday but lest I forget, we had a pitch for a live brief with Yes Agency today. 2 Level 1 teams and 1 Level 2 team presented their ideas for reworking Yes's website. Some good ideas and a winning team made up of Lauren Penny and Becki Moore. Well done you two, I want to take a photo of you with your certificates. I'll link up to Yes's blog when the pictures are up.

Day 2 of the build ...
Day 2 of the build continued s..l..o..w..l..y.. but we're nearly there now. Walls built and nearly all painted. Tomorrow should see the space ready for putting work up.

I'll update the blog after the weekend - following on from the EFCCE Conference in Vienna (much to report, I guess) and once the work goes up. In the meantime here are some of the images selected to go in the Degree Show Showcase in The Drum:

Degree show prep has started and not without it's teething problems. We're having 2 walls built in the main studio that will remain permanent and will enable the creation of a brand room for next year. Lo and behold, not enough was ordered but we're over that now. Grey paint instead of white ... K9 is staying grey now! Students were messy, but cleaned up after themselves - hurrah! And we had the first proper D&AD New Blood meeting.
Here's some pics of the days events. Not very exciting and I did use the wrong lens, but never mind.

Let's get the degree show started.
The process starts today. 10am, paintbrushes will be dipped and walls will be painted. Photos will appear later, both here and on FaceBook. We have an editorial, ad and showcase going into the Drum with our very own Chloe Smith writing the editorial. I'll link to it when the Degree Show issue comes out.

Activities, activities
We don't just get the students out and about on this course, you know? The staff are doing different things too. Just because the academic year has slowed down for Levels 1 and 2, myself and Paul are on with stuff.
14-16 May is the annual EFCCE Conference. Both of us will be in attendance in Vienna. Not content with soaking up the Viennese hospitality (and viennese whirls too) I will be giving a presentation in collaboration with Amanda from Yes. The presentation will work on 2 levels - 1. the collaboration between industry and academia / 2. new demographics. More info closer to the event.
I'm also involved in a collaborative project with Yvonne Koert from the Avans Hogeschol in Breda on Teaching Creativity and judging the final of the student competition.
Hopefully time for a beer or two and setting a brief for a live interactive collaboration between Staffs Uni, Avans Hogeschol Breda, Werbe Akademie Vienna and others for October. This will involve incoming Final year students from our institutions teaming up virtually for a pan-European one-day brief. Watch this space.

The year so far.
This'll be a bit of a long one as I dig deep into the recess of my memory banks and pick out the highlights of 08/09.
The first trip of the year belonged to Level 1 - Glasgow. Good bonding exercise for our new crop of bright, young hopefuls.

Chloe Smith and Vish Kapoor worked with Yes on a new business pitch. Nice work and nice experience, but unfortunately pipped at the post.

New York just after Christmas. Teams made up from all 3 Levels tackled a brief for the New York Health Department set by Bandujo Advertising + Design. Great feedback and a great experience all round.

A number of live briefs later and ABM went down to London. For the first time, and marking a permanent change, all 3 Levels were invited. This gave Level 1s the opportunity to work on more live briefs with Levels 2 and 3. This is how Chloe Smith, Level 3, summarised the experience:

"ABM, ABM where’ve you been? The highlights were the one-day brief at VCCP, the planning brief at TBWA, the re-brand brief at Dave, and the portfolio crit at Lean Mean Fighting Machine. The other agency visits were great opportunities too. Pentagram are inspirational, 3 Fish in a Tree followed up by contacting some of the students who went there, BBH are also inspirational and were sowing the seeds for a long and healthy relationship with us (hopefully!).
…down to London to see…VCCP, 3 fish in a tree, TBWA, Dave and Pentagram, of course!
As all Levels from One to Three gathered for the annual London Agency visit, it could be said spring was in the air. With TBWA on the agenda along with VCCP, Pentagram, BBH, Lean Mean Fighting Machine, Cartils Claessens, Dave and 3 Fish in a Tree, it promised to be 3 days of sights and insights!
Presentations by cross-level teams at TBWA and VCCP proved a re-sounding success; we met the Meer Kat, had a brief history of Pentagram, caught up with 3 fish and showed TBWA our planning skills, also dropping in on Lean Mean Fighting Machine. VCCP tested us with an intensive one day brief, using our own experiences and insight to come up with a campaign discouraging Binge Drinking amongst Students…of course we knew nothing about the topic and had to conduct some improvised research. Congratulations to Grace and Lauren as challenge winners for the day! Second and First Year respectively.
The TBWA teams were selected beforehand and also tackled a brief the agency had worked on previously, finding a new angle for the promotion of P&O Cruises. The teams presented their ideas behind how the Cruises could be shown in a different light in order to attract new business and at the same time avoid alienating existing customers.
Level Two also had the opportunity to visit Dave with the ‘A brand that bugs you’ brief. A great change to get their teeth into a brand that is in dire need of help and use a creative strategy to hypothetically turn it around. A brilliant portfolio piece and a valuable audience of experienced creative to pitch to, what more could you ask for!
A successful three days, and part of a much larger journey for us all, whether it is upwards to Level Two or Three, or out of the Dwight building nest with fully fledged ABM wings to fly solo, it was a much valued experience for all parties concerned. There were some fantastic results, ideas, portfolio pieces, precious advice and a peep into industry, plus of course some priceless photographs, courtesy of both the Johns sneaking around with cameras...
Chloe Smith, Level 3, Advertising and Brand Management, April 2009"
Along the way we had Mark Smith from Level 2 receiving a commendation at the Roses Student Awards, and Abby Reynolds and Mona Rollenhagen receiving a commendation at the SkillSmart Retail Student Competition, entries to the EFCCE Student Competition and a website redesign brief from Yes (pitching in May).
Live briefs at Level 3 have led to a number of client companies implementing our Level 3 students' strategies and concepts .... so here's to a successful Degree Show and New Blood.

here we go, here we go ....
This is the first post for the ABM Blog. Over the coming months I'll try and regularly update this whenever new and exciting things happen on ABM. From live briefs, to placements, to graduate successes and, of course, our regular visits to agencies in London and New York.
We are coming to the end of this academic year so the next post will be a round-up of everything that's happened this year (with pictures too).
Then we're into Degree Show, then D&AD New Blood, then a few weeks of enjoying the wonderful Stokey summer before we do it all again. Next post in a bit ...
